When as a child I visited my grandparents’ farm in Devon, my grandmother Honor Carver could often be seen wearing a gold locket, hanging on a thin gold chain. On one side one saw the photograph of a rather angelic-looking 10-year old boy and a flock of golden hair on the other side. When asked who he was, she replied: “My brother Douglas, who died in the Great War. He was tremendously loved by the family and we never got over our loss.”…
