The 1897 short story Der Ehrentag (The Hour of Fame) was first published in the journal Die Romanwelt. It tells the story of an unsuccessful actor who is the victim of a cruel joke: during one of his trivial performances, he is celebrated by a gang of hired claqueurs, and feels so ashamed that he goes on to hang himself. This historical-critical edition presents the surviving manuscript, making it possible to trace the genesis of the text.
