Bumpa is born into the hot african savanna. He grows up sheltered in his herd. While playing with the other animal youngsters, however, Bumpa has an experience which makes him frightened to drink from the water hole. When the animals move far away to another water hole in the dry period Bumpa loses the connection, falls behind and finds a very unusual friend.

Will Bumpa survive in the dry savanna? And will he see his parents and his herd ever again?
