The current ethical challenges have shown the limits of the currently dominating types of ethics which are focused on rules and principles. Accordingly, approaches to an ethics based on the concepts of virtue and the good life have regained significance for the philosophical debate. There also has been a resurgence of the debate about the concept of human nature in ethics. In their papers, eminent American, British and German scholars combine historical investigation in ancient and medieval ethics of virtues and happiness with contributions to the contemporary ethical debate.
