No. 247 Gestaltung à la Mode

Post Genre Fashion and Design

Since the beginning of modernism, fashion and product design have drifted off into two distinct branches of the design
evolutionary tree. In some colleges and commercial enterprises the departments have a close working relationship, but
in others they are barely on speaking terms. Yet many of the issues they face – such as the deconstruction and diffraction
of styles, the intertwining of high technology with materials and production, and the pressure to innovate – are the
same. In Gestaltung à la Mode form looks at examples of fashion/design collaborations, confrontations and pioneers;
and we talk to industry experts about fashion and design etymologies, examining the growing role of fabrics beyond
clothing and cushions for the post genre generation.
