No. 268 Arbeit / Work

From the point of view of physics, work is energy transmitted to a body. Human labour, however, is not so easily reduced to a simple formula, since a number of other aspects also have to be factored in. There is the larger economic context, for example, in which we create added value and by doing so – in most cases – earn a living; and then there are the social, emotional, and psychological impacts of work, both positive and negative. Working conditions can be modelled, which is why in our next issue we will be homing in on workplace design and looking into new manufacturing methods and new divisions of labour, as well as creative work and the processes that it, too, entails. You will find an interview with Swiss graphic designer Ruedi Baur concerning the visual identity of the Manifesta 11 with the motto “What People Do For Money” soon online at form.de/dossiers Other themes will include the history and typographical genesis of the font “Neue Kabel”, the question of which materials make the best chairs, and a Carte Blanche by Belgian designer Sophie Krier.
