Since 1967, when Marshall McLuhan declared that “The Medium is the Massage”, it has been widely known that the medium – the form – through which a message is delivered is just as crucial to the meaning of that message as the message itself – making it, among other things, a question of design. Digitisation poses an added challenge to design: digital content needs to be designed not for
a single medium (frontend/device) but to function on many devices and in various different contexts. In addition to discussing technical prerequisites and practical applications relating to this challenge, this issue will discuss new content and methods that are relevant both socially and in terms of design.
