The Nürnberger Künstlerlexikon (Nuremburg Encyclopaedia of Artists) gives an extensive and unique overview of the people responsible for the rich cultural life of this city. Besides visual artists, it also includes literary figures for example, as well as publishers, musicians and patrons. Over 20,000 entries on artists and artistic craftsmen who worked in Nuremburg between the twelfth century and the middle of the 20th century convey an impressive tradition. The encyclopaedia covers not only artists and craftsmen born in Nuremburg, but also those whose work is connected with the city. The entries take into account the careers, years of birth and death, the number of marriages and children, the year in which the title „Master“ was bestowed, details of working and living conditions as well as economic and private circumstances. Where known, the buyer who commissioned a piece of work is noted, as are the prices of some pieces. The chronological index of professions arranges the artists in 19 occupational categories. The index of places covers over 1,600 places of birth and death in 15 countries. A glossary explains the most important terms.
