The Xianjiang region is located in northwest China, a remote area inside Eurasia. It occupies one-sixth of China´s territory, and with its more than 1.5 million square kilometres it is the largest region in the People´s Republic. The Uighur minorityare people with a Turkic lenguage, a sedentary tradition and Sunni Muslim religion who, from a historical and cultural viewpoint, are very close to the other Turkic-speaking peoples of Central Asia.
