Apart from explanations regarding the background of intellectual history, the commentary volumes (in English) provide insights into Shaftesbury‹s own intratextuality as well as into the history of the texts and their reception and impact. In addition, there is a detailed description of those significant emblematic copper engravings, previously disregarded by researchers, which were carefully designed by the author himself and could be found in numerous editions of the 18th century. These are described in their connection to each of the texts mentioned. Volume IV.1 contains the commentaries on ›A Letter concerning Enthusiasm und Adept Ladys‹ (Standard Edition I.1), ›Sensus Communis‹ (I.3), as well as ›Soliloquy‹ (I.1); volume IV.2 deals with ›Inquiry concerning Virtue‹ (II.2), ›The Moralists‹ (II.1), ›Miscellaneous Reflections‹ (I.2) as well as ›Second Characters‹.(I.5).
