On Water
In all cultures, man has always had a special relationship to water. Water was and is an essential prerequisite for all life on earth.
Since the very beginning, there have always been close ties between us humans and water; there is no natural substance on earth to which we have a stronger connection.
For generations, poets have written about water in various ways. Water has also been the theme of many a musical composition. Music lovers will think of the Water Music by George Frederick Handel, or that by Georg Philipp Telemann, Bedřich Smetana’s Moldau or Franz Schubert’s Trout Quintet.
The relationship between man and water has also found expression in the visual arts, and naturally there are countless depictions of water in painting. Pictorial artworks prove to be even more expressive than the spoken or written word.
The contemplation of various works of fine art shows that the human being’s relationship to water has changed over the centuries. Whereas from antiquity to the nineteenth century it was dominated by emotional or sensual aspects, it has meanwhile become more firmly rooted in reality.
Water takes on all colours, from the white of the spray to the blue of the sky, from the brightness of the sun to the blackness of night. And it appears in many different forms.
We are looking forward to the exhibition of Sven Hoffmann’s works at Wasser Berlin International. Feel the inspiration and experience water as a calm element or a restless one, a vehicle of feelings and moods, a symbol of the stirrings of the soul.
