Betrayal of trust – one of Schnitzler’s recurrent motifs – was dealt with until the end of the Hapsburg monarchy by means of the duel. In the story Die Frau des Weisen, however, Schnitzler runs through the psychological consequences of a case where the betrayed person refrains from vengeance and maintains his silence. The new edition reproduces the text of the first edition and documents its process of creation with all of the manuscript sources.
