From 1901 to 1908, Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) worked on her famous print series Bauernkrieg, which pays homage to the violent upheaval of German peasants in 1524/25. Kollwitz, who consistently fought for social justice, symbolised the rage, suffering, and grief of the insurgents in haunting images. The catalogue documents the fascinating genesis of the series in the context of numerous works by other artists who inspired Kollwitz towards this unique masterpiece.
