Geheimnisvolle Poesie: ein Einblick in das fotografische Werk von Christian Vogt

Seit den späten 1960er Jahren hat Christian Vogt ein fotografisches Werk geschaffen, das durch gestalterische Erfindungskraft und überraschende Wendungen beeindruckt. Er beherrscht die Kunst des fotografischen Haikus ebenso wie das virtuose assoziative Erzählen mit Bildern. Fotografie ist bei Christian Vogt nie nur Abbild, sondern immer auch eine Frage nach dem, was sich an Bedeutung oder Geschichte hinter der Oberfläche verbirgt, eine Reflexion über die Subjektivität des fotografischen Blicks. Dabei ist er sich stets bewusst, dass das eigentliche Bild erst in der Wahrnehmung des Betrachters entsteht. Today I’ve been you vereint Vogts «Fotografische Notizen», ein ab 1981 geführtes fotografisches Tagebuch, mit neueren, grossformatigen Serien: dem «Flaxen Diary», den «Nebelbildern» (beide 2003–2009), den «Naturräumen» (2008/09) sowie der Bild-Text-Arbeit «Skinprints» (2008/09). In dieser jüngsten Serie wird der Text zum Bild und die Haut, auf der er aufgestempelt ist, zum existenziellen Hintergrund für Fragen wie «Am I what I think others think I am».

Der Katalog Christian Vogt, Today I’ve been you erschien zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung in der Fotostiftung Schweiz, Winterthur, 24. Oktober 2009 bis 14. Februar 2010.

Since the late 1960s Christian Vogt has produced a photographic oeuvre impressive for its creative inventiveness and its unexpected twists. He is a master of the art of photographic haikus, and a virtuoso of associative story telling with pictures. To Vogt, photography is never a mere reproduction but always a speculation about the meaning or the story hidden behind the surface, a reflection on the subjectivity of the photographic eye, in the awareness that the actual picture only emerges through the perception of the beholder. Today I’ve been you combines Vogt’s “Photographic Notes”, a photographic diary started in 1981, with more recent series of large-format photographs: “Flaxen Diary”, “Nebelbilder” (both 2003–2009), “Naturräume” (2008/09), and the image/text work “Skinprints” (2008/09). In this latest series the text becomes the picture while the skin on which it is imprinted turns into an existential background for questions such as “Am I what I think others think I am”.
