Trade and Investment Agreements are subject to controversial debate. Yet, too little is still known about their effects. This paper’s findings suggest that trade agreements can have a positive effect on foreign direct investment. Bilateral investment agreements can be effective instruments to steer investments from developed to developing countries but not between high income countries.
