The classical collection on Spinoza‹s biography, compiled by Jakob Freudenthal in 1899, is republished in a largely augmented edition. More than 100 new documents are added – both in the original language and in German translation – and the commentary is completely rewritten according to the current state of research. New light is especially shed on the circumstances of Spinoza‹s excommunication from the Portuguese Jewish community of Amsterdam and of his rejection of the philosophy chair at Heidelberg. The composition of Spinoza‹s library is illuminated, and the exact bibliographical date of the single books are given. A comprehensive bibliography of the sources and secondary literature (more than 1.400 entries) and two registers make this new edition an indispensable tool for further research.
