Although in his lectures on rational theology held in 1783/84 Kant was still convinced that a philosophical theodicy (which reflects on plausible reasons for evil in a world created by God) was possible, his later theodicy essay for example selects a philosophical defense of a moral theism. From 1791 on, Kant believed that only verification of a reasonable compatibility of the existence of a wise creator of the world with the existence of evil was possible.
