The end of September 1794 represents a radical change in Jacobi‹s life: In order to escape from the attacks of the French revolutionary troops, he leaves Düsseldorf-Pempelfort and emigrates to Holstein, at the time part of Denmark. Over the following four years, Jacobi moves from place to place, leading, in his own words, a »Gypsy life«, albeit not an uncomfortable one. It is a life marked by manifold new contacts – not least with prominent French emigrants. Philosophically, this is the period of the work on ›Woldemar‹ (1796) and the critical analysis of Fichte‹s way of thinking. His first letter to Jacobi opens this volume.
