The former SS officer Hermann Westermayer lives a stolen life. Having killed and then stolen the identity of the Jew Daniel Goldstein, he tries, after World War II, to lead a successful life, but his true identity always catches up with him. In the seventies, when he is living in Israel, he receives a letter: someone has discovered his true identity and now tries to blackmail him. Daniel Goldstein, alias Hermann Westermayer, believes that murder will be the solution. But while trying to get rid of the corpse, he gets entangled in a traffic accident and ends up in a Yugoslavian prison. Years later, he realizes that his so perfect mask can no longer protect him; he tells his story to another prison inmate. This novel is based on a true event.
