Gregor Sailer photographs mountains, high mountains. Many of his shots were taken above the tree line that is located between 1,800 and 2,100 meters in the Alps. Sometimes the photographer has lugged his camera far up to inhospitable heights, above 3,000 meters.
Ladiz is the title that the artist has given his photographic explorations in the economic one of the high mountains. With this title he sums up material, method and focus of his investigations.
And this title also reveals some of the reasons the photographer ventured into this extreme alpine landscape. Ladiz is the name of an alpine pasture located in the Karwendel Mountains that was owned by the Sailer family until several generations ago. As the photographer recounts, “ it was lost about 150 years ago in a card game.” This name highlights ownership and loss, a paradise of the past and sudden destruction; concepts and associations that Sailer has applied to a larger area.
