Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803) is generally regarded as being the author of the literary »Sturm und Drang« period and accordingly the late Enlightenment in philosophy and theology. However, the fact that he had a significant influence on many areas of classical German philosophy has often been neglected. This volume studies the not only critical but also affirmative reception of Kant, Schelling, Schlegel, Humboldt or Hegel in their relationship to Herder in the fields of the philosophy of history, metaphysics, ethics and politics as well as aesthetics and anthropology.
