It all began with a gift: in 1815 the banker Johann Friedrich Städel (1728–1816) bequeathed his art collection and assets to the citizens of Frankfurt and in doing so laid the foundation for one of the oldest museums in Germany. To mark its 200th anniversary, the highlights of the house are now engaging in dialogue with pre-eminent lenders from the most renowned museums in the world, covering all areas of collecting, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
