No. 252 Design Education

We have now devoted two issues to the question of where design is headed. It makes sense, then, to turn our attention to the places where designers are trained. Among other things, we will use current examples from Britain to look at the relationship between the training of creatives and their actual working conditions. We will visit a new school for photography and audiovisual media in Goa, India, and ask how much theory is useful in a design course. Beyond our main focus on education we will, as ever, take a look around the diverse world of design: our Archive column will recall the Reimann School; for Raw Materials, we will explore algae; and we will ask what it means when metaphors from the digital and analogue worlds mix.
