People adopt places, shape them and then sooner or later abandon them again. The reasons for this are manifold: financial need, conflict of interests, bad planning, unforeseen events or seasonal fluctuations. The focus theme of this issue prompts us to explore what, for different reasons, happens to these places – from individual rooms to buildings to entire urban districts – once they have been permanently or temporarily aban- doned, and to look at the design potential that lurks there.
