No. 263 Design and Energy

Energy is the basic requirement of human existence. Its availability determines our way of life to a considerable extent and is – at least in the industrial countries of the world – a given for many people. Nevertheless, our current relationship with energy is problematic: the end of fossil fuels is inevitable, most forms of energy production have foreseeable consequences for humans and the environment, and both tapped and (still) untapped resources are triggers for many political conflicts. So, in the upcoming issue, we want to tackle the reasons for this problem. We will report on current and possible future sources of energy and ask what influence design can have on our relationship with energy. You will find
an interview with the two designers of the atom plates featured in our preview image soon in the online form dossiers. Also, in our next issue we will introduce the studio of the London-based art director Anna Lomax and talk to Sebastian Herkner, the designer of “Das Haus” [The House] at the International Interiors Show in Cologne in 2016. The Archive section will be dedicated to Paul Otlet, one of the early masterminds of the Internet.
