Edelmann‹s (1698–1767) autobiography is a personal testimonial of the German Enlightenment. His realism, critical of society and ideologies, the unsparing report on the injustices in the church, his search for fulfillment on earth of the Christian promise of a peaceful and brotherly community are evidence of his opposition in the old empire of the 18th century.
