STUBBORN STATUE, Tomas Kadlcik, Erik Steinbrecher ————— Erik Steinbrechers Arbeit (1963, Basel) hat sich vorallem in zwei Bereichen, jener der Skulptur und jener der Fotographie entwickelt. Der Skulpteur hat sich immer mehr im öffentlichen Raum engagiert, ganz wie der Fotobildsammler, der vorwiegend nur mit Fotografien arbeitet, die er in den Massenmedien gefunden hat, eine andere Art des öffentlichen Raums.
STUBBORN STATUE – zusammen mit Tomas Kadlcik für die Ausstellung Superfundi im Centre de la photographie Genève (noch bis zum 2. Septembre 2007) – ist aus Abfallbildern der Pressefoto-Agentur Keystone komponiert. Alle ausgewählten Bilder wurden wegen ihrer informativen Armut nie an News-Redaktionen weitergeschickt. Erik Steinbrecher, zusammen mit Tomas Kadlcik, hat sie sozusagen „aus dem Papierkorb der Agentur gerettet“. Mag es sich um einen Mann handeln, der mit einem Palästinenserkopftuch bedeckt an einem Schneemann vorbeigeht oder um Penelope Cruz, die in Begleitung eines Mannes eine Art von Alien aus Kunststoff umarmt, über allem liegt ein Rätsel den Sinn der Fotografie betreffend. Alle Sujets sind an Aktualitäten geknüpft, aber jedes ist völlig unverständlich und nur eine Legende könnte da weiter helfen. Diese sind, um unseren Assoziationen freien Lauf zu lassen, in einem kleinen beigefügten Heft aufgelistet.
Das Buch selbst ist aus fünf Serien zusammengestellt, die jede eine mögliche Narration in sich enthält, vom Leser aber erst noch entdeckt werden muß. Der Umschlag des Buchs hat weder Text noch Bild. Der Besitzer findet aber unter der Plastikverschweißung auf die Umschlagseite gelegt, ein Pressebild auf einer Postkarte, doch ist nur die auf der Rückseite gedruckte Legende ersichtlich. The Sculpturer engages himself more and more in the Public Space, comparable to a Photocollector who primarily works with photographs which he finds in mass media publications, another kind of Public Space. ————— STUBBORN STATUE-is a body of work, composed together with Tomas Kadlcik, for the Exhibition Superfundi at the „Centre de la Photographie Geneve“, from rejects of the Press Photo Agency Keystone. The selected images where never sent to Newspapers because of their lack of informative qualities. Erik Steinbrecher and Tomas Kadlcik literally rescued them from the trash. No matter if it deals with a guy wearing a Palestinian headscarf passing a snowman, or Penelope Cruz accompanied by a man hugging an alien made of plastic, there is always the question about the meaning of photography.
Even though all subjects are part of current events they are unintelligible without captions, which are published in a separate booklet which accompanies the book of photographs, so that the viewer can look at the images and let their imagination run free. The book itself is a combination of five parts, where each one tells their own story, not obvious and to be discovered by the viewer. The cover of the book has neither a photograph nor text. Though under the plastic wrapper on the cover there is a Postcard with the caption visible, not the photograph. Joerg Bader, Director CPG
