The historiography of early photography has scarcely examined Islamic countries in the Near and Middle East although the new technique was very soon used by local photographers. This collective volume deals with the notion of an „indigenous lens“ and offers new research on aspects and materials of the history of photography in Iran, the Ottoman Empire, and Arab lands during the 19th century.
