Jonathan Meese was born in 1970 in Tokyo, Japan and now lives in Berlin and Hamburg, Germany.
His work extends across paintings, drawings, prints sculptures, performances but also surrounds to writing, stage design and directing within the theater and opera field.
Major retrospective exhibitions were „Revolution“, 2003 at Kestnergesellschaft, in Hannover, „Mama Johnny“, 2006 at Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, „Jonathan Meese Sculpture“, 2010 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, „Jonathan Meese. Malermeese – Meesermaler“, 2013 at Museum der Moderne in Salzburg, 2018 „Meese’s Odyssee at Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich and „Dr. Zuhause : K.U.N.S.T. (Erzliebe)“ at Kunsthalle St. Annen, Günter Grass Haus and Overbeckgesellschaft, in Lübeck.
His work is part of several private and public collections as Sammlung Falckenberg, Hamburg; Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; Albertina, Vienna, Austria; Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, USA; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Canada; Louisiana-Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark; Musées de Strasbourg, Strasbourg, France, K20, Düsseldorf and several more.
